The Portlandia Group is a small, independent poetry press founded by poet Karen Braucher in 1999 to encourage the finest emerging poets writing in English by publishing their poetry chapbooks.
A panel of published poets, most with advanced degrees in literature or writing, judges the finalists anonymously to determine the winner.
Winners of the Portlandia chapbook competition in the order they have won are: Judith Taylor of Los Angeles (1999), Kurt S. Olsson of Maryland (2000), Elisa A. Garza of Houston (2001), John Suroweicki of Connecticut (2002), David Biespiel of Oregon (2002), Ron Drummond of New York City (2004), John Pursley of Alabama (2006), and Jen Karetnick of Florida (2008) .
The competition now takes place every other year. The next contest is in 2010 and the deadline for submission is will be announced in late 2009. Contest guidelines will be available at that time.
Thank you for supporting Portlandia by entering or by purchasing chapbooks.
